Silverwater Park was again the venue for our Opening Rally on the 1st February.  This is the third year we have used this park, which has proved to be well-suited for this event.

This year again there was an excellent roll-up of interesting vehicles: lots of familiar cars which are always interesting to see again, and others that we don’t see often or which we hadn’t seen before. It’s hard to start listing the cars because they all looked so good and they are all full of interest. I think, though that I must mention a few.

Bill Hall’s stunning 1910 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost is always worth seeing. It looked wonderful parked under the trees, and looks even better if you see it on the road.

John Lackey’s  MG Q made its first appearance, and John gave us a few demonstration laps of the field. It was worth having a close look at the beautiful restoration.

Stephen Figis’s Riley Imp was the car my guest wanted to take home.

There were quite a few mouth-watering Rolls-Royces and Bentleys including Don Young’s lovely Wraith and  Greg Mackie’s Bentley with a very smart Australian body.

The range of cars was huge, and I think that is one of the things that makes our club’s events so enjoyable. One could wander from Sid Reinhardt’s imposing Speed 6 Bentley to a duet of Fiat Arbarths, pausing to drool over Graham Lawrence’s Lagonda, on past a brace of Lancias, to Michael Skura’s charming Ford roadster, stopping to admire the XK Jaguars and Richard Andreoni’s handsome Mk V, with Alvises and MGs Y, SA, L, and so on. (I’m sorry if I missed mentioning your car.)

The surprise visitor, though, was Bill Lloyd in his 1915 Detroit electric. I have known Bill for some time, and I have invited him several times to come to one of our events. He has a very busy life and hasn’t been able to come previously, so I was delighted that he could be there this time. His car created a lot of interest, and he was kind enough to take quite a few members for rides around the field.

Apart from all of this delicious machinery, there was, as usual, a wonderful crowd of people. Time passed quickly with all the chatting, catching up and comparing notes.  Another enjoyable event, full of interest and with lots of friends to meet.
